Finance notices cloud bills. Engineering notices latency. The gap between them is usually design: duplicated environments, chatty integrations, and storage that was never given an owner or a retention rule.
We treat cost as a requirement alongside security and recovery. That means asking, before build, which data must be hot, which workloads are bursty, and who is paged when spend jumps. Tagging is not a strategy. Ownership is.
Migration programmes that ‘lift and shift’ to hit a date often freeze a costly shape. A better sequence is: make the application observable, then move, then reshape the parts that dominate the bill. It is slower to announce and faster to become boring — which is the goal.
If your cloud conversation only happens at renewal, you are already late. Put a monthly cost review next to reliability. The organisations that do this spend less time explaining surprises.
